On 30th October 2024, a full-day workshop on “Photography and Videography” was conducted for the 1st-year BDS class, fulfilling the requirements set by HEC. Dr. Usmanulhaq and Dr. Sana Tariq led the workshop, aiming to equip students with essential skills for clinical dental photography. The day was divided into informative lectures and hands-on training sessions, providing a comprehensive learning experience.

The morning session began with a lecture on the introduction to clinical dental photography, covering the importance of documenting dental cases with precision and professionalism. Dr. Sana emphasized ethical considerations in photography and the significance of proper profiling of photographs, ensuring that students understood the importance of patient confidentiality and professionalism in clinical images.

Dr. Usmanulhaq then took over, delivering a series of lectures on photography basics and camera settings. He guided the students through the fundamentals, such as adjusting ISO, aperture, and shutter speed, providing them with a strong foundation for effective clinical photography.

The hands-on sessions were designed to reinforce these concepts practically. Dr. Usmanulhaq supervised students as they practiced adjusting camera settings to achieve optimal lighting and experimented with different types of ring flashes. This practical exposure helped students understand how to manipulate light for high-quality images, an essential skill in clinical photography.

In the final hands-on session, Dr. Sana focused on teaching students the standard techniques for capturing dental extraoral and intraoral views. I demonstrated the correct use of retractors and contrastors to ensure clear, standardized images, which are crucial for accurate case documentation. By the end of the day, students had gained valuable skills in both photography theory and practical applications, leaving them better prepared for clinical documentation.

The workshop concluded with positive feedback from the students, who appreciated the opportunity to learn a skill integral to their future dental careers.
